Update as of January 9: Joe's daughter Kathy reports that her Dad is out of intensive care "through sheer willpower," and that she will accompany him home as he continues to battle serious complications from his fall.
Legendary sculler and coach Joe Burk has been in the hospital since New Year's Eve after a fall that caused him to break his femur. There have been considerable complications since, and Joe has been in ICU for the past few days as doctors try to get his lungs opened to let him breathe on his own.
A message from Joe's daughter Kathy said that "I am not able to write many of Dad's numerous friends, so feel free to share any info with them. I can only say that Dad has never been alone and they let me sleep in a chair next to him, so he knows family is there to watch over him. Keep him in your prayers."
row2k has been advised we can let the rowing community know that Joe and Kathy's mail address is 10215 North 82nd Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85258, and that Kathy's email address is [email protected], but that she is occupied at the hospital as of the last report and does not have a computer at home.
As we all pull for Joe's recovery, plans continue to go forward to honor Joe at several events during the San Diego Crew Classic April 5 and 6; contact Peter Mallory at [email protected] or 619-990-3660 as plans evolve over the coming days.
row2k will post new information as it becomes available; thanks to Peter Mallory for his assistance.
